How this is worked out
- Annual pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52. At 40 hours a week that is 2,080 paid hours a year.
- Weekly = annual ÷ 52; biweekly = annual ÷ 26; semimonthly = annual ÷ 24; monthly = annual ÷ 12.
- Hourly from a salary = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × 52).
- Each figure is rounded to the nearest cent only at the end, so rounding never builds up.
- Figures are gross: no federal, state or local taxes, Social Security, Medicare, benefits or other deductions are taken out.
Frequently asked questions
- Does this include taxes?
- No. Every figure is gross pay before taxes, withholding and deductions, so your take-home pay will be lower.
- Why multiply by 52 weeks?
- A year has 52 full weeks, so 40 hours a week is 2,080 hours a year. This assumes you are paid for every week, including paid time off.
- Is semimonthly pay the same as biweekly pay?
- No. Semimonthly is 24 paychecks a year and biweekly is 26, so each semimonthly paycheck is a little larger for the same salary.
- How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?
- Choose "Annual salary to hourly" and enter your salary and weekly hours. The calculator divides the salary by your hours per week times 52.
