How this is worked out
- Enter all the hours you worked in one workweek. The first 40 are paid at your regular rate.
- Every hour over 40 is paid at 1.5 times your rate (time and a half), or 2 times if you choose double time.
- This is the federal weekly rule only. State daily or weekly overtime rules and employer policies can differ, and this tool does not cover them.
- Figures are gross: no taxes, withholding or deductions are taken out.
Frequently asked questions
- Who has to be paid overtime?
- Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, most hourly (non-exempt) employees must get at least time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some salaried and other employees are exempt, so check with your employer or the US Department of Labor if you are unsure.
- Is overtime counted per day or per week?
- The federal rule counts hours per workweek, not per day or per two-week pay period. Some states also have daily overtime rules, which this calculator does not include.
- When is double time paid?
- Federal law does not require double time. Some employers and some state laws pay it in certain cases, so the calculator lets you choose 2x.
- Does this include taxes?
- No. All figures are gross pay before taxes, withholding and deductions.
